CASSM Lab
The CASSM Lab is the University of Oxford’s experimental social science lab within CASSM. Building on the work previously associated with the Centre for Experimental Social Sciences (CESS), it supports rigorous behavioural and experimental research across the social sciences.
We support behavioural research, survey experiments, online and lab studies, and training for researchers using robust causal and experimental methods.
About Us
The CASSM Lab was established in 2025 as part of CASSM’s mission to advance training and research facilitation in the most cutting-edge and novel approaches to social science research. It provides the infrastructure and expertise needed to conduct high-quality experiments involving human participants.
With dedicated facilities and participant pools for laboratory, virtual laboratory and online studies, the Lab supports ambitious research projects for researchers across the world. Recent examples include a laboratory experiment on how different incentives shape the advice people give to others, a survey experiment examining how expectations about inflation influence voting behaviour, and qualitative work exploring the relationship between health perceptions and social status.
Training
The CASSM Lab also provides training for aspiring experimentalists. Whether through the Oxford Spring School, courses in partnering departments, or our summer school, the Lab team offers researchers at all levels the opportunity to learn the techniques needed to design rigorous causal research. Recent courses have included introductions to causal inference, experimental methods, laboratory experiments and oTree programming.
Over the coming year, we plan to expand our offering to include applications of recent advances in AI. We also host speaker series featuring methods experts and prominent academics working at the frontier of research, alongside workshops designed to improve workflow design and team cohesion.
